Through the use of a Dragonian artifact called the Dragon Tear, Lynx switches bodies with Serge. Our main objective for Chrono Cross was to share a little bit of the Chrono Trigger worldview, while creating a completely different game as a means of providing new entertainment to the player. They are ranked according to eight tiers certain high level Elements can only be assigned on equivalent tiers in a character's grid. As his adventure proceeds from here, Serge is able to recruit a multitude of allies to his cause. Schala's storm nullified Chronopolis's defenses and allowed Serge to contact the Frozen Flame. When a playable character loses all hit points, he or she faints.

To complement the theme of parallel worlds, he gave Another and Home respectively dark and bright moods. Square began planning Chrono Cross immediately after the release of Xenogears in 1998 (which itself was originally conceived as a sequel to the SNES game).

A notable difference between the two games is that Magus-present in Radical Dreamers as Gil-is absent from Chrono Cross. The melody of "Far Promise ~ Dream Shore" features prominently in "The Dream That Time Dreams" and "Voyage ~ Another World.". This has been another source of controversy among fans in that many feel that the dimensional theme was not used well, and that there were very few differences between the 'Home' and 'Another' worlds. The story of Chrono Cross focuses on a teenage boy named Serge and a theme of parallel worlds. To make up for the lack of size, there are two dimensions that the player has to go through. The world map is different from many other RPGs in that it is very small and there are no random encounters on it. This has been a source of controversy among some fans who think that allowing anyone to learn any spell takes out the variation between the way different characters fight. However, attacks will be stronger if the character is the same initiate color as the spell they is casting. The spells are now powered by "elements", which allow anyone to learn that particular spell. The party can see the monsters on the map and avoid them, unlike earlier games in Squaresoft's flagship Final Fantasy series. As in Chrono Trigger, enemy fights are not random. Though the battle engine is essentially turn-based, it is moderated by a stamina system. With over 40 playable characters, a branching story line, and multiple endings, the excellent story can become lost in the game's often unwieldy execution. But nefarious forces are also vying for the Frozen Flame to suit their own purposes. Serge wants the power to save himself from dying in a parallel universe. This story focuses on the quest of a young boy, named Serge, to find the Frozen Flame, which will give the beholder the power to bend space and time. Like Chrono Trigger, the game is about crossing through time and setting things right. The PlayStation sequel to the popular Chrono Trigger role-playing game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Chrono Cross continues its predecessor's mind-bending plot, but from a completely new direction and a whole new fighting system.
